iOS 7.0.2 Update Available with Bug Fixes

Apple has released iOS 7.0.2 for compatible iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch keyboards, a minor update that apps that is primarily a security release. The update resolves a series of bugs that could have potentially allowed someone to bypass the lock screen passcode on iOS 7 devices, and it also reincludes Greek keyboard support for passcode entry.

The update is recommended for all iOS 7 users to install because of the security bug fix. The brief release notes contained within the OTA update are as follows:

• Fixes bugs that could allow someone to bypass the Lock Screen passcode
• Reintroduces a Greek keyboard option for passcode entry

The build number for iOS 7.0.2 is 11A501. It is unlikely such a minor release addresses any of the perceived performance or battery life issues that some iOS 7 users have experienced, but we’ll let you know if we notice any meaningful improvements in either department.

Download iOS 7.0.2 with OTA

iOS 7.0.2 is a very small download and is quickly obtained through OTA. You will need to be on a wi-fi network to be able to use Over The Air updates:

  • Open “Settings” and go to “Software Update”, choose “Download and Install”

Once installed, the device will reboot and be running the latest version.

Users can also install the update through iTunes, either letting iTunes update a compatible device automatically upon connection, or by using the firmware files listed below. Note that using IPSW is typically considered more advanced and not the best solution for most users.

iOS 7 has been released, and while most users should update to iOS 7.0 directly on their devices using Over-the-Air, another option is to manually update compatible iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices to the latest version by using IPSW firmware. Typically, manual updates with firmware files are considered a bit more advanced, but it’s really not too complicated and you can read about it here if going with a manual update or installation interests you.

These IPSW firmware files weigh in at several GB and are hosted on Apple’s super-fast servers. The file should have the extension “.ipsw” when downloading, if the file tries to download as a .zip or another odd file format, you may want to right-click and choose “Save As” to be sure it remains as the proper format.

Note: If the download link initially does not work, open it again or refresh the download link and try again. This downloading issue seems to impact some web browsers only.

iOS 7 Update Now Available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch – iOS 7

Apple has released iOS 7 into the wild. As you likely know by now, it offers a significant visual overhaul to the entire mobile experience, and also includes quite a few new features.

Devices compatible with iOS 7 include: iPad 2, iPad mini, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPod touch 5th gen, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, and iPhone 5C. Despite the official supported hardware list, we still recommend that older model iPad and iPhone users hold off on updating until a point release resolves some of the ongoing performance issues. Of course, you don’t have to take that advice, and you can find the iOS 7 update right now through iTunes or on your iOS device itself with Over-the-Air update.

Update to iOS 7 Right Now with OTA

The simplest way to update to iOS 7 is with Over-The-Air updates on the device itself.

  • Open Settings, go to “General”, then go to “Software Update”

If OTA isn’t working for you, you can also find the update in iTunes. Another option is to update manually with IPSW, which will require you to download iOS 7 firmware from these links first.

Resolving “Cannot Install Because it Requires More Storage”

Do note that installing the iOS 7 update through OTA requires over 3.1GB of space initially, despite the download being much smaller than that. That is so the update can unpack and install on the device – it does not take up 3.1GB of space when completed. Basically that means you will need at least 3GB of space available on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch before it will install.

You’ll know this is an issue because the OTA update will tell you “This update cannot be installed because it requires at least 3.1GB of storage.” This is by far the most frequently encountered error for users attempting to install the iOS 7 update on their devices right now, and the easiest solutions to clear up a lot of storage space quickly are the following:

  • Delete apps you don’t use
  • Transfer photos to a computer and clear off the Camera Roll
  • Recover the “Other” storage space by deleting Message threads and clearing temporary files
  • Delete the music library and resync your songs after the update has finished installing

You can also install the update through iTunes, though you will need to get iTunes 11.1 first so that you can sync the device afterwards.

If you’re waiting until later to perform the update, don’t forget to follow our thorough preparation guide. At the very least, back up before beginning your 7.0 update!

Developers who have held off on installing Mavericks beta versions thus far can access a code through the developer center to install DP5 directly without having to update from the prior version. This also allows you to create your own bootable Mavericks USB installer out of a flash drive, but it must be done before Mavericks is actually installed.

The final release of OS X Mavericks is expected this fall and includes many new features and enhancements for Mac users. Though the precise release date is unknown, it will likely be launched near the public release of iOS 7, which is largely expected sometime in late September or early October.

iOS 7 Beta 5 Released for Developers to Download

iOS 7b5 weighs in between 100mb-250mb, depending on the device to be installed on. As usual, over-the-air updating is the fastest way to get the latest beta on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  • Head to Settings, go to General, then go to “Software Update”

The OTA delta update is fairly small, and other than often stalling on “Preparing Update” for a while, is generally very quick to install.

Those registered with the iOS Developer Program can also grab beta 5 firmware directly from Apple servers. In order to use these links you will want to be logged into the dev center beforehand:

As usual, the direct download links arrive as a disk image which can be mounted for access to the IPSW firmware file. Using the IPSW must be done through the latest version of iTunes.

The third beta of iOS 7 has been released by Apple for supported iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models. The beta arrives as build 11A4414e and is expected to include many bug fixes and improvements, as it further pushes iOS 7 to it’s anticipated public release later this year

Those running iOS 7 beta 2 can download the new beta directly from Over-The-Air updates:

  • From Settings, visit “General” then go to “Software Update” to find the new version

Tapping “Download and Install” begins the update process. OTA update remains the easiest way to get the latest beta versions of iOS 7, as the update arrives in delta format making it a smaller download that is then installed directly on the device.

Installing through Software Update can sometimes hang for a while on the “Preparing Update…” stage, so don’t be surprised if it takes much longer to prepare the update than it does to download. The iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will reboot itself when the update is completed.

Users who are interested in performing a clean install of iOS 7 beta 3 can download firmware contained on a disk image for compatible devices directly from Apple’s Developer Center (dev login required), then use the IPSW to update directly from iTunes:

Online polls find many prefer iOS 7 icons over iOS 6

After Apple unveiled the new look of its iOS 7 mobile operating system earlier this month, many in the design world criticized the platform. But a series of online polls this week show many users like the icons featured in the upcoming operating system more than those in iOS 6.

The polling service Polar is hosting a series of polls comparing icons on iOS 6 with their iOS 7 counterparts. In most of the polls, users are choosing the new operating system, and when votes from all of the polls are added up together, more go for iOS 7.

Out of the 289,000 votes cast so far, 66% favor iOS 7 icons, according to Polar. In total, 26 icons are compared, and iOS 7 icons win in 20 of the polls.

In the case of the iTunes, Weather, Compass, Phone apps and a few others, iOS 7 wins in a landslide.

“What this might tell us is that the new icons are an improvement on the old,” said Luke Wroblewski, chief executive of Polar’s parent company, Input Factory Inc. “But that’s only when you are comparing icon to icon, not when you are looking at [or using] the complete operating system.”

The testing is only, at this point, on individual icons.

Apple doesn’t plan to release iOS 7 to the public until this fall. For now, only developers have access to a beta version of the new operating system, so Apple still has time to make changes.

Given the voting in the poll, Apple should probably look at changing the icons of the Game Center, Safari and Camera apps, all of which had more votes for their iOS 6 versions than iOS 7.

OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 2 Released for Developer Download

Apple has released OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 2 to registered developers. The update to the existing OS X 10.9 beta is versioned as 13A497d and is recommended for all users who are currently running the first version of OS X Mavericks Developer Preview.

OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 2 can be downloaded immediately through the Software Update menu and the Mac App Store.

As found in the App Store, the update weighs in around 1.5GB and is likely the fastest way to upgrade to the latest version. Those interested in making a USB install drive would need to re-download the installation client from the App Store. System requirements appear to be the same as the first developer release.

In addition to OS X Mavericks DP2, an update to Xcode 5 Developer Preview and a second dev preview release of OS X Server is also available.

OS X Mavericks is the next major release of Mac system software and includes over 200 new features and improvements, including tabbed Finder support, enhanced power management, and much more.

iOS 7 Beta 2 Available for Download Now, Includes iPad & iPad Mini Support

The second beta of iOS 7 is now available to download for registered developers. Arriving as build 11A4400F, this update includes many bug fixes and improvements to the beta release, and is available for iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch 5th gen, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, and iPad Mini. This is the first iOS 7 beta that has been made available for the iPad series.

The easiest way to download iOS 7 beta 2 is through Over-the-Air update on any device currently running the first beta. Apple’s developer site also includes download links as usual.

OTA Update

This can be done through Settings > General > Software Update. The OTA download weighs in between 160MB and 240MB, depending on the device that iOS 7 is installed on. Downloading the update is quite fast, but many who are installing the update currently find that it sits on “Preparing Update…” for quite a while, with a very slow moving progress bar. Once that is finished, tap on “Install Update” to proceed with the actual installation, where a “Verifying Update” message appears before the device reboots with a new progress bar, before launching into the second beta.

Direct Downloads

iOS developers registered with Apple can also log into Apple’s Developer Center to get direct download links to beta 2 IPSW. Those wishing to install iOS 7 beta 2 on an iPad must use the developer portal and download the firmware directly from Apple

You can also use the links below, which point directly to the DMG file hosted on Apple’s servers. Do note these will be only accessible to those registered with the Developer Program and logged into their individual accounts. Mount the DMG image to locate the IPSW firmware file to use for updating to beta 2:
