Apple has released iOS 7.1.1, a bug fix update aimed at resolving several issues with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The update is said to fix keyboard responsiveness – presumably addressing the keyboard lag issue that has annoyed some users – improves fingerprint recognition for devices with Touch ID, and also resolves a problem when using Bluetooth keyboards with VoiceOver enabled. Other minor bug fixes and improvements may be included as well.

The iOS 7.1.1 build number is 11D201, and the update is compatible with all devices running iOS 7+, including the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and iPod touch 5th gen.

Always backup your iOS devices before updating system software. The easiest way for most users to download iOS 7.1.1 is to install through OTA (Over The Air) update. This is done on the device by doing the following:

Open “Settings” and go to “Software Update”
Choose “Download & Install”
The update is quite small, but as usual with iOS updates, requires a fairly hefty amount of available storage space to install. If you see an error message stating “This update cannot be installed because it requires at least ***MB of storage.” you will need to manually clear out apps, media, and data from the device before installing it through OTA, otherwise you can update through iTunes using a Mac or Windows PC instead.

Users can also install iOS 7.1.1 through iTunes Update by tethering their device to a computer, launching iTunes, and checking for updates. Another option reserved for more advanced users is to go about using IPSW firmware files as downloaded from the links below.

Apple has released iOS 7.1 for all compatible iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices, the first major system software update to iOS 7 since the launch last year. The update includes many bug fixes, feature enhancements, speed improvements, as well as a variety of updated user interface elements. Updating to iOS 7.1 is recommended for all users who are currently running any prior version of iOS 7 on their devices.

iOS 7.1 also includes some new features, with CarPlay support, an event overview for Month display in Calendar app, country specific holidays, improvements to Siri, additions to Accessibility including button shapes and further reduced motion effects, and much more. The easiest way for most users to update to iOS 7.1 is through the Over-The-Air update mechanism:

Open “Settings” and head to “Software Update”
Choose “Download & Install”

Always back up your iOS device before beginning a system software update.

Troubleshooting iOS 7.1 Update

Unable to install because not enough storage? Some users may see a “This update cannot be installed because it requires at least 1.9GB of storage. You can make more storage available by deleting items in Usage Settings.” error message on their iPhone or iPad when attempting to install the update. The simplest way to resolve that is to delete enough apps or data to install the update, though that’s not always an option. A secondary choice would be to install the update through iTunes using a computer, as described below.

iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users can also update to iOS 7.1 using iTunes. This will also allow them to get around the capacity error mentioned above.

Apple has released a small but critical update for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, versioned as iOS 7.0.6 with a build number of 11b651. The security update notably includes an important fix for SSL connection verification, and weighs in between 13MB and 36MB, depending on the iOS device being installed upon. This update should be installed on all compatible devices as soon as possible.

The initial release notes bundled with the iOS 7.0.6 update are very brief, stating simply “This security update provides a fix for SSL connection verification.” Apple elaborates a bit further on their knowledge base article, providing the following details for what the update resolves:

The easiest way to download iOS 7.0.6 is through the Over-The-Air update mechanism, accessible through the Settings app > Software Update. Choose “Download and Install” and agree to the terms and conditions to start the update process. Despite being a minor update, it can take a while to install as the ‘verifying update’ process lingers for a while on the home screen, before rebooting to the Apple logo where the actual firmware update occurs. Users can also choose to update through iTunes.

Apple has released iOS 7.0.5 for select iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C models. The minor update includes bug fixes which are said to correct network provisioning for these two specific iPhone models that have been sold in China. In other words, if you don’t have an iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C that is compatible with Chinese cellular networks, you won’t see this update available.

Though the update release notes specifically mention devices sold in China, many other users throughout the world have found the iOS 7.0.5 update available for their compatible iPhone models. Initial reports suggest that users based in the USA will not find the update for their devices.

As of writing, iOS 7.0.4 remains the most recent publicly available iOS version for other iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models. iOS 7.1 remains under development and is currently limited to users registered in the iOS developer program through Apple. Users can always check for the newest version of iOS available by opening the Settings app on their devices, heading to “General” and choosing “Software Update”.

Apple has released iOS 7.0.2 for compatible iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch keyboards, a minor update that apps that is primarily a security release. The update resolves a series of bugs that could have potentially allowed someone to bypass the lock screen passcode on iOS 7 devices, and it also reincludes Greek keyboard support for passcode entry.

The update is recommended for all iOS 7 users to install because of the security bug fix. The brief release notes contained within the OTA update are as follows:

• Fixes bugs that could allow someone to bypass the Lock Screen passcode
• Reintroduces a Greek keyboard option for passcode entry

The build number for iOS 7.0.2 is 11A501. It is unlikely such a minor release addresses any of the perceived performance or battery life issues that some iOS 7 users have experienced, but we’ll let you know if we notice any meaningful improvements in either department.

iOS 7.0.2 is a very small download and is quickly obtained through OTA. You will need to be on a wi-fi network to be able to use Over The Air updates:

Open “Settings” and go to “Software Update”, choose “Download and Install”

Once installed, the device will reboot and be running the latest version.

Users can also install the update through iTunes, either letting iTunes update a compatible device automatically upon connection, or by using the firmware files listed below. Note that using IPSW is typically considered more advanced and not the best solution for most users.

These IPSW files are hosted on Apple’s servers and are intended for manual installation through iTunes.

You may want to right-click and choose “Save As” when attempting to download the direct firmware files, note they should always save with a “.ipsw” file extension.

iOS 7 has been released, and while most users should update to iOS 7.0 directly on their devices using Over-the-Air, another option is to manually update compatible iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices to the latest version by using IPSW firmware. Typically, manual updates with firmware files are considered a bit more advanced, but it’s really not too complicated and you can read about it here if going with a manual update or installation interests you.

These IPSW firmware files weigh in at several GB and are hosted on Apple’s super-fast servers. The file should have the extension “.ipsw” when downloading, if the file tries to download as a .zip or another odd file format, you may want to right-click and choose “Save As” to be sure it remains as the proper format.

Note: If the download link initially does not work, open it again or refresh the download link and try again. This downloading issue seems to impact some web browsers only.

Apple has released iOS 7 into the wild. As you likely know by now, it offers a significant visual overhaul to the entire mobile experience, and also includes quite a few new features.

Devices compatible with iOS 7 include: iPad 2, iPad mini, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPod touch 5th gen, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, and iPhone 5C. Despite the official supported hardware list, we still recommend that older model iPad and iPhone users hold off on updating until a point release resolves some of the ongoing performance issues. Of course, you don’t have to take that advice, and you can find the iOS 7 update right now through iTunes or on your iOS device itself with Over-the-Air update.

The simplest way to update to iOS 7 is with Over-The-Air updates on the device itself.

Open Settings, go to “General”, then go to “Software Update”

If OTA isn’t working for you, you can also find the update in iTunes. Another option is to update manually with IPSW, which will require you to download iOS 7 firmware from these links first.

Resolving “Cannot Install Because it Requires More Storage”

Do note that installing the iOS 7 update through OTA requires over 3.1GB of space initially, despite the download being much smaller than that. That is so the update can unpack and install on the device – it does not take up 3.1GB of space when completed. Basically that means you will need at least 3GB of space available on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch before it will install.

You’ll know this is an issue because the OTA update will tell you “This update cannot be installed because it requires at least 3.1GB of storage.” This is by far the most frequently encountered error for users attempting to install the iOS 7 update on their devices right now, and the easiest solutions to clear up a lot of storage space quickly are the following:

Delete apps you don’t use
Transfer photos to a computer and clear off the Camera Roll
Recover the “Other” storage space by deleting Message threads and clearing temporary files
Delete the music library and resync your songs after the update has finished installing

You can also install the update through iTunes, though you will need to get iTunes 11.1 first so that you can sync the device afterwards.

iOS 7 Beta 3 Download is Now Available

The third beta of iOS 7 has been released by Apple for supported iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models. The beta arrives as build 11A4414e and is expected to include many bug fixes and improvements, as it further pushes iOS 7 to it’s anticipated public release later this year

Those running iOS 7 beta 2 can download the new beta directly from Over-The-Air updates:

From Settings, visit “General” then go to “Software Update” to find the new version

Tapping “Download and Install” begins the update process. OTA update remains the easiest way to get the latest beta versions of iOS 7, as the update arrives in delta format making it a smaller download that is then installed directly on the device.

Installing through Software Update can sometimes hang for a while on the “Preparing Update…” stage, so don’t be surprised if it takes much longer to prepare the update than it does to download. The iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will reboot itself when the update is completed.
